Background: The City of Fortuna has been violating permits and discharging polluted water from their sewage treatment plant into the Eel River and Strongs Creek for over 5 years.
RW Action and Results: River Watch's legal settlement with Fortuna
includes sewer pond sludge removal system, replace grit treatment system, upgrade
sewer main inspection, cover sludge drying bed, rehabilitate North Main Pump Station,
implement flood control at treatment plant, blower replacement, and the reconstruction
of their collection system to be completed by court order by 2006. Legal fees were
covered in the consent decree as well as $75,000 to Community Clean Water Institute
for water quality testing in the Fortuna area. CCWI is coordinating several projects
in the Fortuna area in cooperation with the Fortuna Creeks Project (Fortuna creek
monitoring), the Friends of Van Duzen (watershed education at elementary schools
in the Fortuna area), and with three Humboldt State students (working on water quality
